Wichita State Tops ESPN’s BPI Rankings

After ESPN released their 2017 College Basketball BPI Rankings on Thursday, it may come as a surprise to some that the Wichita State Shockers sit atop the list. With the fourth ranked offense and defense in the NCAA per ESPN, the Shockers topped the list as the enter the 2017-18 season ready to start their first season in the AAC Conference.

The two teams in last years NCAA title game, North Carolina and Gonzaga took falls in the rankings. UNC, who ranks 26th in this initial version of BPI, finished last season third in the metric and winning the national title. Gonzaga, which lost to UNC 71-65 in the national championship game, is 60th.

ESPN’s BPI rankings greatly differ from the Vegas Odds, as Michigan State is favored to win the 2018 NCAA Championship. In the BPI rankings, Michigan State sits at No. 17. Duke, who has 7/1 odds to win the National Title, sits at No. 14 in the rankings.

The ESPN BPI rankings do not account for transfers, which can have an impact. Wichita State lost guard Daishon Smith, who started 12 games last season and bench forward Eric Hamilton.
