NEW YORK-  Last year the Villanova Wildcats fell to the Seton Hall Pirates in a classic Big EAST battle. This year the defending National Champs refused to let history repeat itself as they handily defeated the Creighton Bluejays 74 -60 to win the Big EAST Tournament.

Led by elite defense, holding the Bluejays to only 41.4% from the field and 25% from 3 point land. Led by Josh Hart, who poured in 29 points 6 rebounds taking home his 2nd Dave Gavitt Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player of the Big East Tournament, and Jalen Brunson‘s 17 points and 5 assists, the Wildcats won their second Big EAST tournament title since conference realignment.

Marcus Foster and Cole Huff led the way for the Bluejays with 11 points each. The Bluejays who despite losing were comfortably in the NCAA Tournament field per projections. Brunson and Kris Jenkins were named all-tournament as was Foster.

3 Takes:

  1. Villanova is not playing around anymore: After escaping against Seton Hall on Josh Hart’s life-saving tip in, the Wildcats came out with a no-nonsense mentality. Their defense was as good as it has been during the tournament and really caused problems for the Bluejays offense. Look for Villanova to build on a solid BET, as they look to repeat as National Champions.
  2. Ronnie who?: While the usual weapons for Creighton struggled (Marcus Foster with 11, Patton with 10, and Khyri Thomas with 6), sophomore Ronnie Harrell Jr. provided a great spark off the bench with 9 points and 7 rebounds in 13 minutes. interesting to see the role he will play in the Big Dance.
  3. Big EAST NCAA look out: After a solid tournament run by Xavier, none of the Big EAST teams should find themselves in Dayton for the first four. Villanova is a probable 1 seed, potentially the Number 1 overall, and the rest of the teams will be scattered. Expect the Big EAST to have 7 teams in the tourney; Nova, Butler, Seton Hall, Providence, Marquette, Creighton, and Xavier.

With Selection Sunday looming, it will be interesting to see where the Big EAST’s representatives will be placed. Expect the unexpected and get ready, because THE MADNESS IS FINALLY HERE.
