VCU Lands 2018 Point Guard PJ Byrd

PJ Byrd Commits

PJ Byrd, the 6-foot-1 point guard from George Bush (TX) High School, announced his commitment to VCU on Wednesday via Twitter.

“This whole recruiting process was tough and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” said Byrd in a statement released via Twitter. “I was counted out, told I wasn’t good enough, but God pushed me through. [I] never thought this day would come. Mama, We Made It!! I’m very blessed to say that I’m committing to VCU!!”

Byrd’s commitment comes just a few days after taking his first and only official visit to Boise State (Sept. 1). He also held offers from schools such as Albany, UMass, Murray State, New Mexico State, Rice, and Tulsa, among others.

According to 247Sports, Byrd is ranked as the No. 324 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 23 player from the state of Texas. He joins Corey Douglas as the second commit in the Rams’ 2018 class.

Playing with the Houston Defenders on the Under Armour Circuit this summer, Byrd averaged 10.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game, in 14 games played. He helped lead the Houston Defenders to a 5-7 record.

Byrd’s teammate with the Defenders, Miller Kopp, recently took an official visit to Butler. He spoke with D1Vision about his visit. Kopp is currently considering Butler, Northwestern, Michigan, Georgetown, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt.
