“We have 16 really good and versatile players that were chosen to stay on our squad for at least a couple more days,” said USA U16 National Team head coach Don Showalter. “What’s impressed me the most is how hard they worked. It’s a really good group overall from that standpoint. We have a lot of kids who can play different positions. They can play maybe two, maybe three positions, which, as we all know, is very important at the international level.”

All 16 finalists will remain in Colorado Springs for at least three more training sessions. Team USA will then announce the 12 players that will make up the final roster for the 2017 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

The 2017 FIBA Americas Championship will be held June 14-18 in Argentina. The four top finishing teams will qualify for the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup.

The eight teams in this years event include the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay and Venezuela.

The USA will play in Group B and will face the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Puerto Rico in the June 14-16 preliminary round. Semifinals will be played June 17 and the finals are slated for June 18. The United States is 20-0 in FIBA Americas U16 Championship action.

The US has won the gold medal in all four previous FIBA Americas competitions and should be the heavy favorites once again in 2017.
