Taurean Thompson, the 6-foot-10 power forward from Syracuse University, enrolled at Seton Hall on Thursday, according to a report from the Asbury Park Press. He will sit out the 2017-18 season and then have three years of eligibility remaining.

Although Thompson won’t be eligible until the 2018-19 season, he is expected to make a big impact after the Pirates are expected to lose Angel Delgado, Ish Sanogo, Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez.

According to ZagsBlog, a Syracuse spokesman had no comment on whether Thompson had been given an official release, referring instead to a statement this week by head coach Jim Boeheim.

“We have been informed that Taurean is taking a leave of absence from Syracuse University,” Boeheim said in a statement to Syracuse.com.  “My understanding is he wants to go to school closer to home due to some family health issues.”

As a freshman at Syracuse last season, Thompson averaged 9.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per game. To replace Thompson this season, Syracuse brings in 7-foot-2 Providence transfer Paschal Chukwu and 6-foot-10 freshman Bourama Sidibe.

Seton Hall doesn’t have any commits for the 2018 class but their 2017 class consists of Sandro Mamukelashvili, Myles Cale, Jordan Walker, and Darnell Brodie. On Tuesday, Seton Hall made the list for five-star Louis King.

“My understanding is he wants to go to school closer to home due to some family health issues,” Boeheim told Syracuse.com in a statement.

Coming out of high school at Brewster (NH) Academy, Thompson was regarded as a four-star prospect by 247Sports and the top player in his class from the state of New Hampshire.
