Montez Mathis, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from John Carroll (MD) School, announced his commitment to Rutgers on Friday via Twitter.

“I just felt that Rutgers was a good fit for me,” Mathis told Scout.com. “I really liked how coaching staff was all on the same page. I talked to all of the coaches throughout the process and built a good relationship with them as a whole. Rutgers a good fit for me and I feel I can help turn the program around.”

Mathis was originally set to commit on Friday before it tweeting out on Thursday that he would wait to make his decision. He took an unofficial to Rutgers earlier this year (May 13).

According to 247Sports, Mathis is ranked as the No. 79 player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 4 player from the state of Maryland. Mathis is the second commit for Rutgers in as many days after they landed 2018 Max McClung on Thursday. Mathis, McClung and Mamadou Doucoure are the three commits in Rutgers’ 2018 class thus far.

“I’m just looking forward to the challenge of turning the program around,” Mathis told Scout. “I know I can take it in. I think we can be real good. We already have a good core returning and we have good pieces around me in this recruiting class. I am ready to come in and compete.”

Mathis’s decision was down to Rutgers and UConn, but Virginia Tech, Kansas, Texas A&M and Xavier made up his final 6. He spoke about Rutgers with 247Sports on Monday:

“I like Rutgers a lot. My mom and coach [StevePikiell, they’re like best friends. They talk every single day. Not even about basketball, they just talk about life stuff. I like how he’s turning the program around and I’m the number one priority for them and say I can come in and change the Rutgers program.”
