Avery Johnson: Rise of the Tide

Former NBA coach of the year Avery Johnson has been nothing short of excellent throughout his coaching career, whether it be with the Dallas Mavericks or the Brooklyn Nets.

What Johnson is building at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa could be greater than anything he has done prior. Johnson struck gold with the 2017 recruiting class, landing McDonald’s All-American 5-star guard Collin Sexton and five-star in-state guard John Petty, as well as local underrated big man Alex Reese.

Collin Sexton | SG | #10 Overall | #2 SG

Sexton, a freak athlete, just recently won the Powerade JamFest dunk contest at Illinois Tech and didn’t hesitate to tell USA Today’s Jason Jordan about it. “It was great.” Sexton said, “I felt like everybody wanted to see a show so why not?” Sexton is known by most as the “number 1 trash talker in the country,” and he’s sure able to back it up. Averaging an incredible 28.3 points and 7.4 rebounds in high school and leading his team to a 21-8 season, Sexton looks to lead the Tide to another good season under Johnson’s reign.

John Petty | SG | #21 Overall | #5 SG

Averaging a menacing 20.5 points per 40 minutes in EYBL play, the Huntsville shooting guard means business, but while most of the young bulls fame comes from his spot up shooting, he’s made a name for himself on the defensive end averaging 1.7 steals per 40 and 1.0 blocks per game. Petty already has the body to compete at the NBA level and with the help of Johnson, you could be seeing him putting on that cap on June 23rd.

Alex Reese | PF | #23 PF

A diamond in the rough, the local big man is this recruitings class most underrated player. Averaging 25.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game in his junior season, Reese is able to bang down low as well as stretch it out to the perimeter. Sitting at 86th in the nation according to 24/7 sports, Reese is a player who basketball fans will soon know on a national level.

With these three players headlining a top 5 class in the nation, Johnson and the tide will take the NCAA by storm and potentially make the Tide a preseason top 3 team in the SEC.
