Oscar Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List Announced

Oscar Robertson Award Watch List

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association selected 32 players for the 2017-18 Oscar Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List on Monday. The award is to be presented to the national player of the year by Mr. Robertson at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio.

Last season, former Kansas point guard and current Sacramento Kings rookie Frank Mason III took home the Oscar Robertson Trophy, becoming the first Jayhawk to win the award.

The Oscar Robertson Trophy is voted on by the entire membership of the association, which consists of more than 900 journalists. It is the nation’s oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

The legendary Robertson was the USBWA’s first player of the year in 1959 and was the consensus national player of the year as a sophomore in 1958, the year before USBWA started giving its player of the year award. The USBWA renamed the award the Oscar Robertson Trophy in 1998.

The ACC leads all conferences with eight representatives, led by preseason ACC Player of the Year Bonzie Colson of Notre Dame. Duke, who was recently picked as the No. 1 team in the Preseason AP Top 25 poll, lead all teams with four representatives. Close behind the ACC was the SEC with seven selections and the Pac-12 with four. The Big-12 and Big East each had three selections, as the AAC and Big Ten each had two.

The Atlantic-10, Summit League, and West Coast Conference each had one player selected.

Nine other conference preseason players of the year made the USBWA list, including seniors Devonté Graham of Kansas and Yante Maten of Georgia, one of three co-players of the year from the SEC. The full list is shown below:
