Old Dominion Lands 2018 Point Guard Jason Wade

Jason Wade, the 6-foot-5 point guard from Trinity Episcopal (VA) School, announced his commitment to Old Dominion on Wednesday in a video via Twitter. He took his first and only official visit to ODU last month (Sept. 15).

“The deciding factor was the great relationship that I built with the coaching staff and players over the past year that they recruited me,” Wade told D1VISION on Wednesday via text. “It’s close to home, so my family can make it to games to see me play. I feel ODU does a good job of developing their players.”

According to 247Sports, Wade is ranked as the No. 292 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 9 player from the state of Virginia. He joins Jarvis Vaughan as the second commit in Old Dominion’s 2018 class.

Wade chose Old Dominion over schools such as Appalachian State, Campbell, Delaware, East Carolina, Hofstra, James Madison, La Salle, UMass, Quinnipiac, and Wofford, among others.

Wade’s father, Ronnie, played at Old Dominion from 1982-1986 and the younger Wade cited his family ties as a reason for his commitment, as he said, “My dad played there, so I find that kind of cool to be able to play at the same school that my father did.”

Playing with Boo Williams on the Nike EYBL Circuit this past summer, Wade averaged 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, in 16 regular season games. In five games at Peach Jam, he averaged 6.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. He made it clear that he feels that his style of play will fit in well with the Monarchs.

“I feel that I would be a good fit because I feel that I’m a pretty good defender and ODU is a defense-first team,” he said. “They play through their guards a lot, so the ball is going to be in my hands.”

With Old Dominion being Wade’s only official visit, it was clear that his trip there made an impact on him, as he said, “I enjoyed the feel of how together everyone was and how much it was like a family,” said Wade. ” It didn’t feel like it’s just a team.”
