NBA Rumor: Lakers Would Pass on Lonzo Ball if Draft was Today

“The Los Angeles Lakers would pass on Lonzo Ball if the NBA Draft was today,” according to a report from Jordan Schultz. “Team isn’t convinced he’s a star and remains concerned about LaVar.”

“It’s not even close right now,” the source told Schultz. “Ball won’t be a Laker unless they really start to buy into him as a star.”

Ball is projected as the overall second pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the latest DraftExpress Mock Draft. The overall second point guard behind Markelle Fultz at number one and just ahead of De’Aaron Fox at number five.

Ball is scheduled to conduct an individual workout and meet with the Lakers this Wednesday, June 7th.

During his one season at UCLA, Ball averaged 14.6 points, a NCAA leading 7.6 assists and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field and 41.3% from three.

Ball is widely considered the main reason for UCLA’s turnaround. The Bruins improved from 15-17 in 2015-16 to a 31-5 record and a third seed in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

The Celtics invited Ball for a workout, an invite the Ball camp politely declined.

“Listen, we’ve drafted guys that wouldn’t come in for workouts before,” said Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge when asked about Ball declining the invite. “I mean it’s not the end of the world. We’ve watched them play a ton. We have a lot of information on them.”

LaVar Ball, the outspoken father of Lonzo, could be part of the concern when it comes to the Lakers.

“I think we are naive if we believe LaVar Ball factor doesn’t have an impact on a team drafting Lonzo, even though he’s a good kid,” Jordan Schultz tweeted.
