NBA Draft: Celtics Take Top Overall Pick, Lakers Will Pick Second

One day away from playing the Cleveland Cavaliers in game one of the Eastern Conference finals, the Boston Celtics secured the top overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers will pick second and likely have a shot at hometown hero Lonzo Ball. The Lakers were in jeopardy of losing their pick to the Philadelphia 76’ers — who will pick third — if they fell out of the top three. They had the third best odds to get the overall top pick going into Tuesday’s lottery.

Markelle Fultz is still projected as the top overall pick on the updated 2017 NBA DraftExpress Mock Draft. Ball is still projected as the second overall pick to the Lakers. Josh Jackson is projected third to Philadelphia and Jayson Tatum fourth to the Phoenix Suns.

The 2017 NBA Draft will be held at the Barclays Center on June 22. This is the 71st overall Draft with first occurring in 1947 when Clifton McNeely became the first overall number one pick. McNeely never played in the NBA, opting to coach high school basketball instead.
