Montez Mathis Decision 247Sports

Montez Mathis, the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from John Carroll (MD) School, will announce his college choice on Friday, per Scout.com.

Mathis previously said he’s focusing on Rutgers and UConn and planned to make a college decision soon. He is also considering Virginia Tech. “I think Rutgers and UConn are in the lead,” he added. “Virginia Tech is in the mix, but Rutgers and UConn are the in lead.”

“I’m close to committing,” Mathis told Scout.com. “I’m going to be committing soon.”

Mathis has taken unofficial visits to both Rutgers (May 13) and UConn (June 3). He broke down all three schools to 247Sports on Monday:

UConn: “I like UConn a lot. Coach Raphael Chillious has been recruiting me since I was in sixth grade. So, I like UConn a lot. Coach [Kevin] Ollie, he’s a real down-to-earth guy. He and I have good conversations on how he’s going to help me get to the next level. And it’s UConn, they get guards, they’re a guard-oriented team. So, they get them to the next level.”

Rutgers: “I like Rutgers a lot. My mom and coach [Steve] Pikiell, they’re like best friends. They talk every single day. Not even about basketball, they just talk about life stuff. I like how he’s turning the program around and I’m the number one priority for them and say I can come in and change the Rutgers program.”

Virginia Tech: “I like Virginia Tech. I have a teammate that goes there when I was at Oak Hill and he talks to me a lot about it. Buzz Williams is a real outgoing guy and Coach Christian Webster… he’s a real cool dude. I really like Christian a lot. We’re building a good relationship and we talk every day. He gave me some tips. He used to play basketball too.”

According to 247Sports, Mathis is ranked as the No. 80 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 4 player from the state of Maryland.

With 12 expert predictions in 247Sports’ Crystal Ball, 100 percent of experts expect Mathis to choose UConn. UConn is also in the running for 2018 Nate Roberts, who spoke with D1Vision earlier this week about his recruitment.
