Michael Porter Named Naismith Player of the Year

The Atlanta Tipoff Club has revealed their 2016-17 Naismith National High School Awards recognizing the Coach and Player of the Year as well as their First, Second, and Third Team All-Americans.

The award winners included eleven players from the Class of 2017, three from the Class of 2018, and one from the 2019 Class.

Former National Players of the Year include NBA All-Stars Kobe Bryant (1996), LeBron James (2003), Dwight Howard (2004) and Kevin Love (2007). More recent winners include Andrew Wiggins (2013), Ben Simmons (2015)  and UCLA freshman sensation and Naismith Player of the Year Finalist Lonzo Ball (2016).

The 2016-17 Naismith National High School Player of the Year, Michael Porter Jr., hails out of Seattle (WA) Nathan Hale High and has committed to play at the University of Washington, although it is uncertain where he will land due to the recent releases of Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar.

According to D1Circuit, during the 2016 EYBL season, Michael Porter Jr. had the second highest points per game at 22.8 per to go with a fifth best 10.9 rebounds per, tied for fourth overall.

In the 2016 Nike EYBL Peach Jam Championship game, Porter had a game-high 33 points to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and one block. Porter and his Mokan Elite team defeated a loaded PSA Cardinals squad, 93-65.

Porter, along with Oklahoma commit and Norman (OK) Norman North five-star point guard Trae Young, earned the prestigious Nike EYBL Peach Jam Most Valuable Player award.

Porter has been just as dominating during his senior season at Nathan Hale (WA) where he averaged 37.8 points per outing, leading the Raiders to the Number 1 ranking in the most recent Maxpreps Xcellent 25.

Porter is a member of the 2017 McDonald’s All-American team, the Jordan Brand team and a member of Team USA who will be participating in the 2017 Nike Hoop Summit.

As a member of the 2016 USA Men’s U18 National Team, Porter won a gold medal with a 5-0 record at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship

Porter is one of five seniors named to the 2016-17 Naismith High School Boys All-American First Team. All five members ranked in the top 5 of all four major ranking outlets, 247Sports, ESPN, Scout, and Rivals.
