Five-Star Marvin Bagley Update – Photo Gallery

Sierra Canyon (CA) five-star Marvin Bagley III will reportedly make his college announcement tonight, potentially changing the landscape of college basketball for the upcoming season. He has a final list of six schools, but most expect his decision to be from three: Duke, UCLA or USC. All three received official visits and all three have a slot waiting for the multi-talented forward to fill. An official to Arizona never occurred as Bagley cancelled the visit.

Bagley is still taking course work to finalize his high school requirements that will allow him to reclassify and play during the coming season. The question is timing, will the NCAA Clearinghouse clear him in time to play during the coming season.

Both Duke and USC begin classes within the next week. UCLA is a quarter school, so Fall classes don’t begin until September 25, a potential benefit for the Bruins and coach Steve Alford.

His commitment tonight seems to be an indicator that Bagley is confident he will be cleared by the NCAA. Without that confidence, it seems Bagley would wait on confirmation from the NCAA or not commit at all and play his cards for next year.

But, this move isn’t as much about college as it is the NBA Draft. Sources told CBS Sports it’s not about playing college basketball this season as much as it’s about becoming eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft. To be clear, he wants to play college basketball this season. It’s his goal. But as long as Bagley graduates early, he’ll be eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft regardless of whether the NCAA clears him for freshman eligibility.

Bagley is scheduled to announce his decision during the 11:00 pm ET version of SportsCenter on ESPN.
