Mark Smith, the 6-foot-5 four-star shooting guard from Edwardsville (IL) High School, announced his commitment to in-state Illinois and head coach Brad Underwood on Wednesday.

Smith joins four-star point guard Trent Frazier and three-star point guard DaMonte Williams as the third commit in the Fighting Illini 2017 class. Illinois is also in the running for rising 2017 wing Francesco Badocchi out of Miege High (KS) as well as transfer Carlton Bragg, who would have to sit a year prior to being eligible.

Illinois outlasted the like of Michigan State, Ohio State and even late runs from Kentucky and Duke. Smith officially visited Northern Illinois, Michigan State, Wright State and Southern Illinois last fall. He officially visited Ohio State last weekend before announcing for Illinois.

247Sports ranks Smith as a four-star, the number 4 player in Illinois, the number 16 shooting guard and the number 74 overall player in the nation.

Kentucky made a serious late run at the 6’5″, 225 lb bruising point guard, but in the end, Brad Underwood won this recruiting battle.
