Lonzo Ball to Conduct Individual Workout, Meet With the Lakers

Lonzo Ball — the projected number 2 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by DraftExpress — will work out for the Los Angeles Lakers on June 7, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports.

Recently, Ball declined an invite to workout for the Boston Celtics, who own the overall top pick in the June 22 Draft. It is assumed the Celtics will tale Markelle Fultz as the overall top pick.

Lonzo has potentially been seen in the light that his father LaVar Ball has cast, but teammate Bryce Alford says that comparison is “unfair.”

“It’s just an unfair thing for Lonzo just because I think he gets a rep he doesn’t deserve,” Alford told NBA writer Bill Oram. “And I don’t want to say anything poorly against LaVar, I think he’s done a good job of getting him ready to be where he’s at and he’s helped him become a great basketball player. So, I don’t want to say anything that way, but he does get a persona that’s just totally not him.”

“He’s an absolutely great kid, great teammate and truly cares about what his teammates are doing more so than himself,” Alford continued. “So if anything, I hope NBA people can see that.”

During his one season at UCLA, Ball was a consensus first team All-American, the NCAA assists leader, and the winner of the Wayman Tisdale Award. He averaged 14.6 points while shooting 55.1% from the field, 7.6 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 35.1 minutes per game outing during UCLA’s 2016-17 season.

The Lakers’ front office worked with Ball’s agent, Harrison Gaines, to finalize the workout details. The Lakers are the only predraft workout scheduled for Ball as of now, but he could add one or two meetings with teams near the top of the draft, league sources told The Vertical.

Los Angeles finished the 2016-17 regular season at 26-56, missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Their last postseason appearance was during the 2012-13 season. Their last postseason win was on May 18 of 2012 when they defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder, 99-96 in the Western Conference semifinals.
