Lonzo Ball Will Not Work Out for Boston Prior to June 22 Draft

UCLA freshman Lonzo Ball will not work out for the Boston Celtics prior to the NBA Draft. The Celtics have the overall number one pick in the June 22 Draft.

Boston’s General Manager, Danny Ainge, joined the Toucher & Rich show on Thursday and discussed the Ball situation.

Asked if anyone in the top five had declined a workout for the Celtics, Ainge replied, “Lonzo Ball.”

“Listen, we’ve drafted guys that wouldn’t come in for workouts before,” Ainge stated. “I mean it’s not the end of the world. We’ve watched them play a ton. We have a lot of information on them.”

DraftExpress currently projects Ball as the second overall pick to the Lakers. LaVar Ball, Lonzo’s father, has publicly expressed that he wanted his son to play for Los Angeles.

Lonzo Ball, LiAngelo Ball and LaMelo Ball are all three expected to play their college basketball at UCLA. All three should finish their high school careers at Chino Hills High in Chino, California, a part of the greater Los Angeles area.

Refusing to work out for Boston makes sense when you consider the overall objective of landing with the Lakers. The risk is potentially falling past Los Angeles.

Although that seems improbable at this point, deciding not to work out for the team who possesses the overall top pick isn’t perfect for his future with the Celtics.

“It’s not ideal,” Ainge stated. “They’re making their priority team’s. Sometime players don’t want to come in, not because they don’t like you. They may see the roster and may prefer to go to a different team.”
