Jerry Meyer Talks RJ Barrett and Cameron Reddish Possibilities

R.J. Barrett, the 6-foot-7 versatile forward and No. 1 player in the Class of 2018 per 247Sports, took his second official visit to Duke this past weekend (Sept. 15th-17th). Jerry Meyer, the Director of Basketball Scouting for 247Sports, spoke with D1Vision on Tuesday about the possibility of pairing Barrett with 2018 Duke commit Cameron Reddish.

“If Duke were to land R.J. Barrett along with Cameron Reddish, it would certainly put the Blue Devils in a great position to have the number one class in the country,” said Meyer.

According to 247Sports, Duke has the No. 5 ranked recruiting class in 2018 with the two-man class of Reddish and point guard Tre Jones. Adding Barrett in the mix would be huge for Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski, both offensively and defensively.

“With a couple wings like Barrett and Reddish, Coach K would have great diversity at his disposal,” said Meyer. “They can do pretty much everything offensively and are great ball handlers for wings. Defensively they can guard a number of positions.”

In a time where defensive versatility is key to guarding multiple positions. Jerry confirms that Barrett and Reddish would be capable of switching off screens onto positions 1-4.

Offensively, you could have either Reddish or Barrett bring up the ball to initiate the offense as Duke did in 2015-16 with Brandon Ingram. Coach K could create possibilities in the pick-and-roll game and utilize the ball-handling abilities that Jerry eluded to.

Tre Jones, who is ranked as the No. 6 overall player and the No. 1 point guard in 2018 is another big piece to the 2018 Duke recruiting class. It is clear that Jones will be a major addition to the Blue Devils team as Meyer said:

“With Tre Jones at point guard, this hypothetical trio would make up an incredibly talented and great ball handling perimeter attack.”

With Coach K — arguably one of the greatest offensive minds ever in college basketball — at the helm, this will likely be a nightmare of a team to play against. Add Barrett to the mix, and you possibly have the top recruiting class in 2018.
