Jalen Smith Announces Commitment to Maryland

Jalen Smith, the 6-foot-10 power forward from Mount Saint Joseph (MD) High School, announced his commitment to Maryland Monday via Twitter.

Smith joins Aaron Wiggins as the second commit in the Terps 2018 class. According to 247Sports, Maryland has the No.  7 ranked recruiting class.

Smith’s official words on his commitment:

“First, I would like to thank God for blessing me with the talents which have allowed me to be successful at basketball on the amateur level,” Smith said via his Twitter account. “Thank you to family for always being there to love, encourage, and push me when I thought OI was tired, but it was only my lack of will that I allowed to take over.”

“To my mom, you will never know how thankful I am for that wall you placed around me that kept me focus on my journey,” Smith continued. “To my dad, thank you for my love of basketball and setting the example of what a hardworking manis. Thank you to my teachers, who challenged me and expected the best work at all times and didn;t take it easy on me because I played ball. Thank you to my Coaches/Mentors who have and who still are dedicating their time so that I can be one of the best at my craft.”

“To all of the College Coaches who took time out of their busy schedule to recruit me for the hard work that I have put in academically and athletically, please know that I am honored and thankful,” Smith stated. “With all that being said, I believe that I can academically and athletically achieve my goals at home through my commitment to the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND….. GO TERPS!!!!!!”

Playing with his AAU team, Team Takeover, Smith has averaged close to 11 points, six rebounds, and a block per game this summer.

“I felt like Maryland would allow me to get better as a player and as a scholar because if basketball doesn’t pan out, they have the field that I want to study,” Smith told Rivals.
