Indiana Lands Race Thompson; Will Reclassify to 2017

Race Thompson, the 6-foot-8 power forward from Robbinsdale Armstrong (MN) High School, announced his commitment to Indiana on Sunday. Thompson will reclassify to the 2017 class, D1 Minnesota Director Jeremy Miller told Scout.

“Blessed and excited to announce my commitment to further my education and basketball career at Indiana University,” said Thompson in a statement released via Twitter. “Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way.”

Thompson is the first commit Indiana has landed since the hiring of Archie Miller earlier this year. He joins four-star forwards Justin Smith and Clifton Moore along with three-star point guard Aljami Durham as the fourth commit in Indiana’s 2017 class. Thompson took an official visit to Bloomington last month (June 21).

Asked about his commitment to Indiana, Thompson focused on head coach Archie Miller.

“Super good coach that is going to take my game to the next level and a good person as well,” Thompson told D1Vision via text.

“The coaching staff, they did a great job recruiting him for the short time they were at IU,” Miller told Scout. “They made Race a priority and made him feel really wanted.”

“The other thing that jumped out to him, was it was evident they have a great fan base and facilities,” he added. Thompson received an offer from the Hoosiers earlier this year (May 2).

Playing with D1Minnesota on the Adidas Gauntlet, Thompson has averaged 12.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists on 52.5 percent shooting through 11 games. He helped lead D1Minnesota to an 8-4 record. Prior to his reclassification, Thompson was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 86 player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 3 player from the state of Minnesota.

His father, Darrell Thompson, played running back for the University of Minnesota and later the Green Bay Packers. Thompson was also considering Minnesota before his decision to commit to Indiana.
