Illinois Lands 2018 Combo Guard Ayo Dosunmu

Ayo Dosunmu, the 6-foot-4 combo guard from Morgan Park (IL) High School, announced his commitment to Illinois on Thursday at his high school. The announcement was live broadcasted by IllinoisHomepage.net.

“I just wanted to do something different,” said Dosunmu in his announcement. “They haven’t had many five-star recruits. I talked to my family about it and I just want to change the culture. This is the best place for me.”

According to 247Sports, Dosunmu is ranked as the No. 27 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 1 player from the state of Illinois. He is the first commit in the Illini’s 2018 class. Dosunmu, who chose Illinois over Wake Forest, said that it wasn’t until a few days ago that he made his decision.

“It was tough,” he said. “I made the decision about three days ago. I felt when I came back to Illinois, it was going to be between Illinois and Wake Forest. Coach [Danny] Manning is a great coach. Him and Coach [Greg] Jones recruited me hard.”

After cutting his list to two schools last month, Dosunmu chose Illinois over Wake Forest. Before cutting down to two, Dosunmu had a top seven of Illinois, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, USC, Wake Forest and Xavier. He took official visits to USC (Sept. 15), Wake Forest (Sept. 29), and Illinois (Oct. 13). Dosunmu says he plans on signing with Illinois in November.

Playing with Mac Irvin Fire on the Nike EYBL this past summer, Dosunmu averaged 23.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.4 steals per game in 16 regular season games. Mac Irvin Fire didn’t qualify for Peach Jam.

“I think that Illinois can get me to the next level,” said Dosunmu. “I think that we’ll be on the rise and hopefully compete for the national championship.”
