Nelson Phillips, the 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Warner Robins (GA) High School, committed to Georgia State on Friday per HypeSouth. Phillips took an official visit to Georgia State last month (Aug. 31).

“I felt that I needed to go ahead and end my recruitment before the season starts,” Phillips told HypeSouth. “The conversations I had with the coaching staff really made me feel comfortable in making my decision. Coach Sharman White and I have really developed a close bond, I trust him. Also, just staying in state was a really big factor for me. Now, my family and friends will be able to come see me play with no worries. Most importantly, my mom loved the school when we visited [laughs].”

According to 247Sports, Phillips is ranked as the No. 151 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 7 player from the state of Georgia. In addition to his official visit to Georgia State, Phillips also took an official to Iowa State (Sept. 15). He joins Kavonte Ivery as the second commit in the Panthers 2018 class.

2018 four-star wing Landers Nolley included Georgia State in his final four on Thursday. He planned to take an official visit to Georgia State on October 7, but that has been canceled due to his commitment coming the same day.

“I am more of a combination guard that can come in and do whatever the coaches ask me to do,” said Phillips. “I mean, I really like to score, but I can also facilitate, defend, and rebound if needed.”
