Duke Expected to Visit Rising Point Guard Mark Smith (Updated With Dates)

The race for the services of Edwardsville (IL) four-star Mark Smith continues to grow. Word surfaced on Monday that Duke will enter the race, or at least take a visit to see the rising point guard, sometime this week, per Derek Piper. Michigan State is expected in on Tuesday.

Tom Izzo and the Spartans offered in late March. Kentucky followed with an offer in early April during a visit from head man John Calipari. Smith told reporters at the Derby Festival Classic in Louisville that he will likely visit Kentucky this week.

“He (John Calipari) showed me videos of Jamal Murray — how he can spot up shoot and play off the ball and run off screens. Hit opens shots,” Smith said.

Izzo has been all-in since the Spartans offered, speaking with Smith daily. Michigan State star freshman Miles Bridges told Smith he was coming back to school for his sophomore season during a recent visit to East Lansing.

“We could be a Final Four team — have a chance to win a national championship if I was to come there,” Smith said. “They feel like they can develop me into an NBA player.”

It’s unclear if Duke can make a push this late for Smith.

The Blue Devils are the current CrystalBall leader for Trevon Duval with 72% of the vote. The nations top senior point guard is also considering Kansas, Arizona, Baylor and Seton Hall. He has officially visited all five.

Smith said he could take another visit to Illinois and that plans are being made to visit UK and Ohio State prior to finalizing a decision. A decision that Smith said could come as early as this week.

Belleville News-Democrat beat writer Norm Sanders reports that Mark Smith will host Michigan State Tuesday evening and Duke on Wednesday. He will then visit Illinois on Thursday and Ohio State on Friday and Saturday. No mention of a Kentucky visit.
