RJ Barrett, the 6-foot-6 small forward from Montverde (FL) Academy, announced his commitment to Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils on Friday on TSN during their 6 pm edition of Sportscentre. Barrett’s commitment comes as Duke opens their 2017-18 season with a home game against Elon on Friday.

According to 247Sports, Barrett is ranked as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2018, after reclassifying from the 2019 class in July. He joins Cameron Reddish and Tre Jones as the third commit in the Blue Devils 2018 class. Jerry Meyer, the Director of Basketball Scouting for 247Sports, spoke with D1Vision in September about the possibility of pairing Barrett with Reddish.

“If Duke were to land RJ Barrett along with Cameron Reddish, it would certainly put the Blue Devils in a great position to have the number one class in the country,” said Meyer.

Barrett, who took his official visit to Duke earlier this year (Sept. 15), chose the Blue Devils over his final three of Kentucky and Oregon. In addition to his Duke official, Barrett also took official visits to Kentucky (Sept. 1), Arizona (Sept. 21), and Oregon (Sept. 23).

“With a couple wings like Barrett and Reddish, Coach K would have great diversity at his disposal,” said Meyer. “They can do pretty much everything offensively and are great ball handlers for wings. Defensively they can guard a number of positions.”

It’s unclear how Barrett’s commitment will have an impact on the recruitment of 2018 Five-Star forward Zion Williamson, who took an official visit to Duke last month (Oct. 20). Through 15 predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, 47 percent of experts expect Williamson to choose Kentucky, with Duke and Kansas each receiving 13 percent of the vote.

Slam Magazine recently spent some time with Barrett, his coaches and family in Orlando for a two-part mini-doc in anticipation of his long-awaited college announcement.
