DICK’s National High School Invitational Finals are Set

The 2017 DICK’s National Finals will tip today at noon ET on ESPN. This years title game includes last year’s runner up and the nation’s number 2 team, La Lumiere (IN). The Lakers will face three-time tournament winner Montverde Academy (FL) in a final filled with Division 1 talent.

La Lumiere’s path included a 64-52 win over Wasatch (UT) in the quarterfinals and a hard fought 54-52 win over three-time tournament champ Findlay Prep (NV) on Friday.

Available 2017 five-star Brian Bowen has been the workhorse for La Lumiere, averaging 20.0 points and 8.0 rebounds over the first two games. Michigan State signee Jaren Jackson pitched in 15.0 points to go with 9.5 boards.

In contrast, Montverde has almost slept walked through their first two games. Led by 2019 five-star sensation R.J. Barrett, the Eagles collected a 74-61 win against Shadow Mountain (AZ) followed by a 72-45 blowout against surprising Greensboro Day (NC).

Barrett has averaged 25 points on 20-37 from the field to go with 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Unsigned 2017 forward Sandro Mamukelashvili, who currently holds offers from the likes of Louisville, Gonzaga and Seton Hall, has pitched in 15.5 points per to go with 8.5 rebounds.

The Lakers fell short of the mythical national title last year, falling to Oak Hill Academy (VA) in a 62-60 loss that saw Alabama commit Braxton Key finish with a game-high 20 points and 9 rebounds to go with 2 blocks and 2 steals for the Warriors, earning MVP honors.

La Lumiere will place five Top 100 ranked players on the court Saturday featuring the 15th ranked Brian Bowen along with Jaren Jackson, Jordan Poole, Jacob Epperson and 2019 point guard Tyger Campbell.

Montverde will answer with four Top 100 players led by the number one player in the 2019 class, R.J. Barrett. Sandro Mamukelashvili, Rechon Black and Andrew Nembhard round out the talent for the Eagles.

This game could come down to who wins the battle between super talented wings Brian Bowen and R.J. Barrett. Both have led their teams in scoring and could see a lot of each other during what should be a great contest.

Asked on ESPN if he was ready for redemption, Brian Bowen responded, “We are 100% ready. We have to come in, stay together and stay strong and we’ll get the win for sure.”
