Clemson Lands 2018 Shooting Guard John Newman III

John Newman III Commit

John Newman III, the 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Greensboro Day (NC) School, announced his commitment to Clemson Thursday following his official visit earlier this week (June 20).

“I think that they are on the come-up,” Newman told Rivals. “They have some good guards coming in and a good big transfer. I think their basketball is on the rise and I just feel good about them winning this year.”

Newman chose Clemson over schools such as Wake Forest, Boston College, Charlotte, Georgia Tech, Old Dominion, Virginia, Cincinnati, and NC State, with interest from North Carolina. Although Clemson was his only official visit, Newman took unofficial visits to Charlotte (Sept. 10) and Wake Forest (Feb. 4).

“They really wanted me,” said Newman. “They called and just really wanted me. I wanted to get somewhere that I was really wanted and a place that I can make an immediate impact but also develop.”

Ranked by 247Sports, as the No. 282 player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 14 player from the state of North Carolina, Newman is the first commit in Clemson’s 2018 class.

“They really want someone that can play both ways,” he said. “They don’t really have a defensive stopper on the perimeter and someone that wants to get stops, which they think I can be.”
