Arizona State Lands 2018 Guard Elias Valtonen

Elias Valtonen

Elias Valtonen the 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Helsinki (FINL) Basketball Academy, committed to Arizona State on Friday per Scout. Valtonen took his first official visit to Arizona State last weekend (Oct. 8).

“One reason was the coaching staff,” Valtonen said when asked about his pledge. “I like their style of play and how they play quick up and down basketball. I think I can get better as a guard there.”

According to 247Sports, Valtonen is ranked as the No. 129 overall player in the Class of 2018 and the No. 27 shooting guard. He is the first commit in the Sun Devils’ 2018 class. In addition to his Arizona State visit, Valtonen also took an official visit to Illinois earlier this week (Oct. 10). Although Valtonen is the only commit in ASU’s 2018 class, they already received a commitment from 2020 Kyree Walker earlier this year.

When I first got [to Arizona State] I felt like I was at another home,” Valtonen said. “I also like the Pac 12.”

This past December, Valtonen played for Finland in the 2016 FIBA u18 European Championship, averaging 7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. Earlier in 2016, Valtonen competed in the u17 World Championship, putting up 14.1 points and 4.4 rebounds a game against his age group.

“Coach Rashon Burno recruited me and I really trust him already,” Valtonen said. “Before I decided to go visit I also talked with coach Hurley. We had a really good time during the visit and got to know every coach.”
