Arizona Hires Lorenzo Romar as Assistant

Lorenzo Romar Hired Assistant

Following assistant Joe Pasternak‘s departure to become the head coach of UC Santa Barbara, Arizona announced the hiring of former Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar to be the new Wildcat’s top assistant Saturday.

“It’s an exciting day for Arizona Basketball to be able to welcome Lorenzo Romar and his family to our basketball family,” said head coach Sean Miller in a statement released by the school. “Lorenzo’s accomplishments in this game speak for themselves, including his successful tenure as the head coach at Washington for the last 15 seasons.”

“However, his dedication to his players, passion for this game and impeccable character is what everybody that knows him loves about him,” Miller continued. “He will no doubt make a significant impact in all aspects of our basketball program as we continue to build and improve in all that we do.”

Guard Allonzo Trier, who announced he would return to Arizona for his junior year, was largely led to return by the hiring of Romar according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

“Of all the potential opportunities that were out there for me, joining the Arizona program was the one that was the most appealing,” said Romar. “I truly believe Sean Miller is one of the best coaches in America. The opportunity to join him, his staff and the rich tradition of Arizona Basketball is something that I’m extremely excited about.”

Last season at Washington, Romar led the Huskies to a dismal 9-22 (2-16 PAC-12) record, losing their final 13 games of the season, despite having potential #1 pick Markelle Fultz on their roster.

Since Romar’s firing, Washington has lost commitments from Michael Porter JrBlake Harris, Daejon Davis, Jontay Porter, Mamoudou Diarra. Jaylen Nowell is the only member of the 2017 five-player recruiting class to not request his release.
