Bam Adebayo to Enter the NBA Draft, Will not Hire an Agent

Kentucky freshman forward Bam Adebayo will enter the 2017 NBA Draft but will not hire an agent, keeping him eligible to return if he so chooses.

“This process we went through at Kentucky was a tough but a rewarding one,” Adebayo said in a release by the school. “It was everything I wanted when I decided to come to Kentucky. It taught me a lot. It taught me how to be a better man on and off the court. I have improved so much since the beginning of the season thanks to the hard work of the coaching staff. They helped me with every step of the process along the way and they never gave up on me.

“I feel like I’m making the right step in declaring for the draft, but I want to be absolutely sure that I’m making the right decision for me and my mom. I’m looking forward to the process and I appreciate the support of the coaches, my teammates and the fans. No matter what happens, it’s been an unbelievable ride.”

Adebayo was the force down low for Kentucky where his 8.0 rebounds per game led the Wildcats. For the season Adebayo averaged 13.0 points on .599 shooting from the field, 1.5 blocks and 0.8 assists in 30.1 minutes per.

With Adebayo putting his name in the draft, Kentucky now has three underclassmen who have declared, De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk and now Adebayo. Sophomore Isaiah Briscoe is the fourth and potentially final piece of Kentucky’s potential draft class to announce his final decision.

Briscoe tested the waters last season but withdrew his name and returned to Kentucky for his sophomore year. The talented point guard averaged 12.1 points while shooting.470 from the field, 5.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 30.4 minutes per outing. Despite playing fewer minutes this season compared to last, Briscoe improved in all three areas, including his shooting percentage from the field.

Kentucky head man John Calipari had high praise for Adebayo.

“Bam was our hardest worker this season,” Kentucky head coach John Calipari said. “You’re talking about a player who can guard all five positions, has more perimeter skills than people know, and someone with size and a physique that immediately translates to that league. Bam is a great kid with a ton of upside. Should he decide to stay in the draft, he will be an outstanding four man in the NBA. Every organization needs character and Bam is a high-character kid who only cares about winning.”

In their latest Mock Draft, DraftExpress projects Adebayo as the 30th overall pick. As it stands, 18 freshman are projected as draft picks, including the top nine. Adebayo will have until May 24 to decide if he commit to the Draft or return to Kentucky for his sophomore season.
